Number 1 Punjabi
The Bhanghra
dance originates from the Punjab, an area which has been involved in many
conflicts during its history. The Punjabi people are proud of their heritage and
this confidence is reflected in their dance. Bhanghra is essentially a dance of
celebration, performed at weddings and parties (usually by the men, but that
wasn't going to stop the Shimmychicks - Anything they can do.....?) The
movements are strong and powerful and the pace of the dance is very fast. Our
costumes are deliberately vibrant concoctions of maroon and gold to reflect the
party atmosphere, whilst the most frequent gesture is the number one salute,
reflecting the fact that the Punjabi people believe they are the best at
anything they do (especially as lovers! ) We were very fortunate to have an
artistic advisor for this dance so our moves are authentic, if not our names for
them, for example Screwing the Lightbulb and Windscreen Wipers. We love this
dance as it is fast, furious and a great deal of fun.
