Camel Race

Traditional tribal is a dance that we have always loved. It is a very powerful dance intended for a group of powerful women. Very important for us is the music as inspiration, and when a friend (Ang, if you're out there, we owe this to you) played us this track, we were hooked. We choreographed the dance in two sessions and have not changed it since. It was almost instinctive. The use of zills ( or finger cymbals) came to us after attending a workshop by Helene, an international gypsy dancer. These give the dual benefits of a dramatic counterpoint to the melody and also make us keep our hands in a dramatic position throughout - or it's bye bye zills! The tassels on our costumes represent the saddles on camels- the track is entitled The Camel Race - and is traditionally performed with turbans. However, one night we were late for a performance and had no time to create them or do our make-up. So we donned the yashmaks, draped our coin belts over our heads and walked onto the dance floor to absolute silence. The effect is stunning, adding just that touch of eastern mystery to the dance. it's true what they say, girls - accessorize everything!
